Google Business Profile Optimization: A Michigan Marketer’s Playbook

For Michigan service businesses, a fully optimized Google Business Profile (GBP) is often the highest-ROI SEO action available. Here’s a practical playbook.

Why GBP Matters More Than Ever

Google’s local results (the Map Pack) appear above organic results for most local service queries. A business with a strong GBP can outrank competitors with better websites simply because their profile signals are stronger.

Step 1: Claim and Verify

Go to business.google.com and claim your listing. Verification is typically done by postcard, phone, or video. Don’t skip this — unverified profiles have severely limited visibility.

Step 2: Choose the Right Primary Category

Your primary business category is one of the strongest ranking signals in local search. Be specific:

  • ✓ “Digital Marketing Agency”
  • ✓ “SEO Agency”
  • ✗ “Marketing Consultant” (too vague)

Add secondary categories for each major service line.

Step 3: Fill Every Field

Most profiles leave valuable fields empty:

  • Service area: List every Michigan city you serve
  • Services: Add individual services with descriptions and prices if applicable
  • Products: Can be used creatively for service packages
  • Attributes: “Online appointments,” “Women-owned,” etc. — check all that apply
  • Business description: 750 characters, lead with your primary keyword

Step 4: Load Up on Photos

Profiles with 10+ photos get significantly more clicks than those with 1–2. Add:

  • Team photos
  • Office or work environment
  • Examples of your work (with client permission)
  • Your logo and cover image

Step 5: Post Weekly

GBP Posts work like a social feed attached to your profile. Post about:

  • New blog content
  • Client results (anonymized)
  • Michigan marketing tips
  • Service promotions

Posts expire after 7 days, so weekly cadence maintains freshness signals.

Step 6: Actively Manage Reviews

Respond to every review — positive and negative. A thoughtful response to a negative review often matters more to prospects than the review itself. Never respond defensively.

A fully optimized GBP takes about 2 hours to set up correctly and 30 minutes per week to maintain. Few Michigan marketing investments have a better return.
